From the beginning
The Vienna Haydn Society was founded in 1969 as the "Joseph Haydn Society." Led by conductor Christian Simonis and graduate engineer Peter Toth from 1974 to 1987, it has been a private concert organizer in Vienna's cultural scene for 50 years. Concilium musicum Vienna has served as the ensemble in residence for over 35 years.
When Paul Angerer assumed the presidency in 1988, it was renamed the "Haydn Society Vienna," as the works of Johann Michael Haydn were to be performed more frequently. The effort to present rarely performed works also extends to composers from the circle of the Haydn brothers. Thus, new musical gems can always be discovered at these concerts.
Christoph Angerer has been the chairman of the Haydn Society Vienna since 2010.
