“Musical and Art History Walk” - From the “Votivkirche” to the “Hotel Regina”
On Sunday, November 26, 2023, the completion of the "Votivkirche" was ceremoniously celebrated in a festive mass - the CmW performed under the overall direction of Daniel Schmidt - after almost 25 years of restoration.
A failed assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph I gave Vienna its second tallest church, entirely in the style of French cathedrals.
The "Votivkirche" is also known as the "Ringstrasse Cathedral." Thus, the "Votivkirche" in Vienna is one of the most striking and important churches in the city and boasts three organs—including the important "Walker Organ," inaugurated by Anton Bruckner in 1878.
Organist Craig Humber will play the Walker Organ and members of the CmW will accompany him.
From the “Votivkirche” you go across Rooseveltplatz to the “Hotel Regina”.
This was built by architect Emil von Förster in 1876/77 for Johann Angerer – not related to Christoph Angerer – and it was a residential palace in the Neo-Renaissance style.
Georg Kremslehner converted the building into a hotel in 1907 and it is still owned by the Kremslehner family.
The doors will be opened exclusively not only in the “Votivkirche” but also in the “Hotel Regina” for the participants of the “Musical and Art History Walk”.
Before coffee and cake—included in the price—Daniel Auner will play music with his friends. Daniel Auner will play a violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (circa 1750) from the collection of the Austrian National Bank, which is located around the corner from the Hotel Regina.
As with many of my “musical and art-historical walks,” tour guide Ina Hauer will shed light on everything from an art-historical perspective.
The cost of participation in this exclusive “musical and art-historical walk” is €78.00 per person (reduced rate €72.00).
